What we do

We accept referrals from parents and carers as well as schools, Children’s Services and other organisations working with children and young people.  We can offer individual and group support as well as tailored targeted support, for example in relation to court proceedings

When a referral is made, we will have a free of charge 15-minute telephone consultation to initially assess if play therapy is the right intervention and to answer any queries either I have or you may have about the service.

Following this, in most cases, we schedule a 90-minute consultation whereby a full history is taken to better understand the difficulties your child may be experiencing as well as learning more about your child and offering you support to manage at home.  This is usually conducted virtually.

Should it be agreed that play therapy and indeed me as the therapist is the right way to proceed, we will meet and the client will be allowed time to have a look at the tool kit as well as completing a Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire of their own, if appropriate. The client will be able to ask any questions they may have of the intervention.

Typically we will plan 12 sessions initially. This is not always the case but on the most part 12 sessions will be recommended as this allows time for the client to explore their difficulties and to build trust in the therapeutic environment. For some clients this may be a long enough intervention; but for many 16 or more sessions are required to allow the space and time for the client to reach resolve in their process.

We will review your intervention at around week 8 and discuss what we (refer, parent/carer and therapist) feel would be best for the client; to end at 12 weeks or continue the therapy. We will typically then review every 6-8 weeks (half termly). A new SDQ will be completed at each review. Preferably these reviews will take place face to face but can take place on the telephone if easier.

A report on the client’s progress will be provided at the end of the intervention and an interim report will be provided 6 monthly should intervention continue for that length of time.  In schools this report is provided at the summer break or 6 month mark (whichever arises first).
